When I first started Makerspace, I thought it would be awesome to change activities each month. This way, when students were using it during lunch or once a month during their library time, they would always have new projects to work on.
My idea to change Lego Challenges each month, STEM Challenges, and the craft for the month, while a good one, was not entirely successful. Creating new materials each month quickly became very overwhelming to do in the first year of Makerspace.
So instead of trying to do everything at once, this year I have focused on Monthly Lego Challenge Cards. Each month, I create 16 new Lego Challenge Cards that are geared towards the events of that month.
If you are looking for quick and easy ways to bring in STEM Activities in your library, these are great to have on hand. Because they are changed out each month, students do not get bored and are continually engaged in the challenges.
Ways to Use Lego Challenge Cards in the Classroom
Lego challenge cards can be used in the classroom in so many great ways! They can be used for:
- Early Finishers
- Centers
- Indoor recess
- Fun Friday
- A class reward
In the library, I use them when we are having a “Makerspace Day,” or when we simply just have a Lego Challenge Day. To make sure students are following the challenges, I take pictures of each challenge the students complete. I post these pictures to my school Twitter account and students love to the recognition. Even if you don’t post them anywhere, they love having their pictures taken!
