I may be a little late to the game, but I have just discovered Flipgrid.com and I love it! Flipgrid is an online educational community where students can share ideas and information using videos. In our school, students are one to one with Chromebooks. Students use Google Accounts to sign in and the functionality of the Chromebook is not always my favorite. However, I have finally found a no hassle way to use the video function on Chromebooks without having to download a bunch of different apps.
I have just begun using Flipgrid with 3rd, 4th, and 5th grade students, and it is such a fun way to bring students together online to share ideas. Teachers are able to post an assignment online and the students all respond using video. There is a great database of resources and assignments that have already been created, so you do not have to reinvent the wheel.
For my students first video, we will be doing 2 Truths and a Lie, where they have to make a video saying three facts about themselves, two being true and one being a lie. Once the videos are posted, students will be able to watch them and guess which of the statements are true and which one is a lie. I found this assignment in the database, so I was just able to add it right to my Flipgrid.
If you are using the free version, you are only able to create one Flipgrid, so basically one class. Right now, I just have all of my students on one grid, but I can see that I will probably need to upgrade it as we start using it more. As my introductory lesson, I had students first discuss the rules and guidelines for posting in an online community.
